RULES
of the International Festival / Competition
of Electroacoustic music and Multimedia
“> SYNC.2015: 25 years of Electroacoustic Music in the Urals”

The International Festival/Competition of Electroacoustic Music and Multimedia “>SYNC.2015” is devoted to 25-year anniversary of the Yekaterinburg ElectroAcoustic Music Studio and will be held in Yekaterinburg in the period of 29 October – 1 November 2015.

The Festival/Competition is held in order to reveal and demonstrate the most talented, artistically valued and highly technological products and projects, characterized by professional use of technology and responding to aesthetic criteria of electroacoustic music. Another most salient goal of the project is the fostering of electroacoustic music as a discipline implemented in the curriculum of the higher music education. The main Festival/Competition subject is Electroacoustic music as a sound art in the controlled multi-spatial and multimedia-aware environment.

The founders of the International Festival/Competition of Electroacoustic Music and Multimedia “> SYNC.2015” are: The Federal State Educational Institution of the Higher Vocational Training “Ural State M.P.Mussorgsky Conservatory (Academy)”, the Independent Nonprofit Organization of Culture “The Yekaterinburg EelectroAcoustic Music Studio” (YEAMS).

The Festival/Competition is spent at financial backing of the Fund «Austrian Cultural Forum» and information support of the magazine «Music and Electronics».


General provisions

The Festival/Competition is run in two parts:
1) Competition of original musical, multimedia projects, program and technical development;
2) Festival as a public demonstration of the musical and multimedia competitive projects noted by the jury of competition, and visitors of festival – Russian and foreign composers, musicians and media artists.

COMPETITION: conditions of participation

Original creative works participate in Competition. The musical compositions and the multimedia projects are represented both on carriers, and in live performance.

Competition is opened for representatives of any countries and nationalities.

The jury of the Competition does not consider arrangement, works in genres of electronic popular music, and also works in which music is a background for some visual idea.

Competition is run in three sections
I. Electroacoustic Music;
II. Electroacoustic music and Multimedia;
III. Original author's development in the field of musical technology
and in two age categories
“A” – students and post-graduate students of high schools (up to 35 years old)
“B” – professionals (no age limit).

Collective participation is permitted.

I. Electroacoustic Music. It is established in three nominations:
– Acousmatic;
– Computer music (sound programming);
– Soundproducer’s experimental works on the organization of acoustic space in electroacoustic music.

II. Electroacoustic music and Multimedia. It is established in two nominations:
– Multimedia – electroacoustic music & video / electroacoustic music & videodance / electroacoustic music, video & scenic movement / computer music (sound programming) & video / computer music (sound programming), video & scenic movement;
– Live performance – live electronic / live electronic & VJ (video installations) / tape music & video and/or VJ (video installations) and/or scenic movement. .

III. Original author's development in the field of musical technology. It is established two nominations:
– program development;
– technical development.


Compositions and projects in stereo formats, ambiaphony (binaural stereo), quadraphony, 5.1, 8.1 are represented.

Duration of creative works is 2 – 15 minutes.

Projects should correspond to the criteria of electroacoustic music.

In projects and compositions the following will be estimated:

– art idea embodied in sound / visual images;
– ability to work with sound as the main element of the compositions, forming a basis for the various updatings creating a multielement and multiplane sound picture;
– ability to work with a shot as the main element the video compositions, forming a basis for the various updatings creating a multielement and multiplane visual picture;
– ability to find new non-standard forms for an embodiment of art sound or visual idea;
– ability to build dramaturgy of creative work as logical interaction and development of sounds / the visual images, creating a sound / a visual picture as a whole;
– synthesis of sound and visual;
– technical idea, and its embodiment.

In program and technical development the technical idea, its embodiment and sound result are estimated.

A participant or a creative group can present on Competition one, two or more compositions / projects in different sections and nominations.

Only the works not published and not publicly performed earlier, the author's rights on which have not been passed to the any legal organizations or physical persons for the period of carrying out of Competition can be sent.

The Competition is held in two rounds

I round – 01 - 20.09.2015
Qualifying round considers applications, audio and video materials submitted to the Organizing Committee.

II round – 21 - 27.09.2015
II round is spent in the form of correspondence voting of the international jury. In the II Tour winners are defined.

Results of the Competition are published on the site of studio – http://yeams.org

Winners and participants will get information on the results of the Competition by e-mail.

Winners are invited to participate in the Gala of the festival and for the prizes.

Travel, accommodation and meals of participants are paid at the expense of the directing party.

The Organizing Committee can assist in the organization of accommodation.

The International Festival/Competition awards three titles of the laureate and four titles diploma in three established sections for each age category.

Category «A»

Section I. Electroacoustic Music :

Teachers of the students and post-graduate students of high schools who have received a rank of the winner or the diploma of the “A” category, are awarded by diplomas.

II place – the diploma of the winner of II degree
III place – the diploma of the winner of III degree

Section II.Electroacoustic section music & Multimedia:

Section III. Original author's development in the field of musical technology:

One special diploma and monetary prize of 10 000 roubles are awarded to participants from the Russian Federation in category "B" for stimulation of development of electroacoustic music in Russia.

Teachers, who trained the winners of the Competition among students, are awarded with special diplomas 'For high professionalism and pedagogical skills'.

Monetary prizes are paid from the sponsor's donations and the entrance fees of participants of the Competition.

Delivery of monetary prizes and performances of winners of the Competition take place

Awarding monetary prizes and performances of the winners of the Competition
take place within the limits of the Gala on 31 October 2015.

Monetary prizes aren't sent.

In case of impossibility of arrival to receive the Prize the Organizing Committee of the Festival-competition in exceptional cases can consider a possibility of transferring the monetary prize via Western Union system with payment of the cost of the transfer from the sum of the prize. In case of impossibility transferring the monetary prize this one comes back in prize-winning fund up to a possibility of awarding the winner.

In case of refusal of the prize money unclaimed monetary prize comes back in prize-winning fund.

The Organizing Committee is not responsible for the non-receipt of a prize by the winner of Competition.

The Organizing Committee undertakes measures to the notice of Winners on the contact data declared by them in applications. The Organizing Committee does not bear the responsibility for the non-notification of Winners in case if they indicate of inexact, incomplete or incorrect data.

For the participants of the Competition who have become winners and received rewards in the form of awards, Federal state educational institution of the higher vocational training “Ural State M.P.Mussorgsky Conservatory (Academy)”, the Independent nonprofit organisation of culture “The Yekaterinburg EelectroAcoustic Music Studio” and other organizations which are taking part in the organization of Competition, aren't tax agents. Participants of the Competition independently carry out tax assignments and other payments provided by the legislation of the Russian Federation, and also laws of those countries which are submitted by winners.

In case carrying out of the Festival/Competition becomes impossible on circumstances independent of the Organizing Committee (a fire, flooding, earthquake, strike, war, actions of bodies of the government or other circumstances independent of Organizing Committee) therefore delivery to winners of monetary prizes becomes impossible, the prize-winning fund of the Competition is kept, and monetary prizes are paid to winners at the first opportunity.

The Organizing Committee should in a timely manner, within 3 calendar days after approach of force majeure circumstances, to inform participants of the Competition on a cancelling of the event.

 

Structure of jury, its power, decision-making order

1. The jury consists of authoritative figures of musical art and incorporates an odd number of participants. The chairman isn't selected.
2. The jury has the right at its own discretion:
– to make a selection of works for festival-competition, rejecting those from them which do not correspond to the specified criteria;
– not to award all the awards;
– to divide places and awards;
– to award additional diplomas.
3. All the judges have equal rights at voting. Decisions of the jury are made by a simple majority vote.
4. The Jury’s decisions are definitive also are not subject to revision.


Conditions of participation in competition

For participation in the Competition it is necessary to send by e-mail following materials till 20 September 2015 (inclusive):

– creative work;
– application forms in English. In application forms the following sections are filled: 1) the Form 1 – data on the composition or the project (the name of composition or project, duration, competition section, a nomination, a realization place, specifications, technical and art ideas); 2) the Form 2 – the data about the participant or participants (a full name, a date of birth, the address, e-mail, a fax, phone, for the Category “A” – an educational institution, the teacher; for the Category “B” – a work place); 3) the Form 3 – the short creative biography of the participant or participants;
– photo of the participant (participants) in .jpeg;
– a copy of the payment document (.jpeg).


In the nominations concerning to Computer Music, with sound result it is necessary to apply files on a disk (digital scores or session / the tools).

In the section III original author's development in the field of musical technology the development description, sound result and a photo (video) is attached to the demand.

Financial conditions of participation in the Competition

The Competition is held on sponsor's donations and payments of participants of the Competition.

The entrance fees make

- in the Category “A” – $25 (US dollars) for one work and $10 (US dollars) for everyone the subsequent;
- in the Category “B” – $50 (US dollars) for one work and $20 (US dollars) for everyone the subsequent.

FESTIVAL: conditions of participation


In Festival, will be presented:
– multimedia projects including of the electroacoustic music, selected by organizing committee on the basis of the submitted applications;
– performances of judges;
– creative meetings with composers in the field of electroacoustic music of Russia and foreign countries;
– lectures and master classes by experts from Russia and other countries.


The festival is open for representatives of all ages, countries and nationalities.

The participation in the festival is free.

Diplomas and monetary awards aren't awarded.

The fees are not paid to authors and artists.

Projects / multimedia performances for participation in the festival are selected by the festival organizing committee on the basis of the submitted applications.

Only the works not published and not publicly performed earlier, the author's rights on which have not been passed to the any legal organizations or physical persons for the period of carrying out of the Competition can be sent.

Authors of compositions and multimedia projects bear the full responsibility for creative works represented by them in the program of the Festival and guarantee compliance author's rights, and other rights of the third parties to the specified works.

For participation in the Festival it is necessary to send by e-mail the following materials till 20 September 2015 (inclusive):

– projects, or the link for project downloading, or the link to the project on the Internet;
– an application in free form in English. In the application one has to specify: data on the project / performance (the name of composition or project, duration, specifications, technical and art ideas); the data about the participant or participants (a full name, the date of birth, the address, e-mail, a fax, phone, the work place or the educational institution and the teacher; the short creative biography of the participant or participants;
– photo of the participant (participants) in .jpeg


Travel, accommodation and meals of participants are paid at the expense of the directing party.

The Organizing Committee can assist in the organization of accommodation.

Works sent to the Festival competition, may be rejected to participate on the following grounds:

• Discrepancy to a format of the Festival/Competition and to conditions of the present Rules;
• The works expressing aggression, propagandizing extremism, violence, consumption of drugs and the alcoholic drinks, containing not normative lexicon or otherwise breaking the current legislation of the Russian Federation;
• The works created with use of another's ideas, including duplicating another's works;
• The works breaking copyright, and other author's rights of the third parties on objects of intellectual property.

Participation in the Festival/Competition implies that the pictures, interviews with participants and winners, as well as other materials can be used the Organizing Committee to highlight the Festival without prior notice and without payment of any remuneration to the media and public information network . This paragraph does not apply to the contact information of participants.

Photo and video shooting is not allowed without the consent of the Organizing Committee during the Festival/Competition.
In the case of force majeure preventing the Festival (fire, flood, earthquake, strike, war, acts of public authorities, or other circumstances independent of the Organizing Committee), the Organizing Committee should in a timely manner, within 3 calendar days after the force majeure, to inform Festival participants on a cancelling of the event.

 

Author's rights


The outstanding author's rights to works represented on Festival-competition belongs to authors.

The direction of works on participation in the Festival/Competition is considered as an agreement of the author to the possible publication of works on the Internet, a mention of works on press, in any materials concerning Competition, in promotional materials-information about the Festival/Competition in mass media, in booklets, catalogues, the albums shining the Competition. Thus the author's accessory of each work is kept and underlined. Payment of the fee to authors is not provided.


In case that the participant will send to participate in the Festival/Competition a work, not being the author of that work and violating copyrights and other rights of third parties for the use of intellectual property, the participant is obliged to compensate all the damages, including the amount of damages, fines, compensation etc., resulting from bringing the legal owner or other persons to the Organizing Committee of the Festival/Competition requirements related to author's rights infringement.
